This is a box set containing 20 Aka Moon albums
from 1992 to 2017. Normally, box sets come with all kinds of extras but
cost a fortune. I do not normally purchase any box sets because to me
they are simply a money grab. However, this set can be had for as low
as $50! If you appreciate jazz in its finest, this is a great bargain.
The album names are listed here, but I will detail each individual album
separately.
Note: this is a small box and each disc sleeve does not have the original
album cover on it. It has the album number and name, and appears like
the front of the box. There is a booklet included which has the details
for each album. I'm rating this at 5 records because if you listen to
any jazz at all, there will be something in here you will love, and at
$50, what's not to love! SC
What a great beginning for a great band. This first
self-titled album reveals the genius of this group's musical path that
will be continued throughout their history. According to the sleeve notes,
this album was inspired by the rhythms of the Aka Pygmies of the southwestern
Central African Republic and in northern Republic of the Congo. This is
the beginning of projects that attempt to interpret a culture into music.
Aka Moon is for those who can appreciate jazz at its best. Prog rock fans
can surely include this in their repertoire with the patience they've
already developed. SC

top as my favorites by this incredible jazz group. Guitars is one of 'em.

I first heard this album some time after it came out, but while it was
still their latest release. I had to steal it via internet to hear my
first copy because, like their ENTIRE back catalouge, it was unavailable
for purchase in the U.S.A. Every once in a while I would scan the internet
(amazon, gemm, and Doug Larson imports) for some of my most sought out
bands albums. Finally I came across this one for a high but doable price
of $18.99.
Like 90% of Aka Moon albums this one is absolutely amazing. This band
has slowly worked its way up into my top 3 bands ever. The other 2 are
probably Genesis and Yes. However, this is not music for "beginners".
I've heard this band described as disjointed sounding. A description that
may define your impression upon your first few listens. But as you get
to know and understand the songs they may start to sound completely coherent
an ingeniously written. They create some of the most complex music that
I have ever heard while retaining an amazing beauty and feeling.
To do an accurate review of this album would be for me to simply say that
this work is just as good as the best of their older works. But because
this band is so great, and yet so unheard of in the U.S., I feel compelled
to comment on the band itself so that maybe someone who reads this will
give this music a chance, and be so greatly rewarded as I have.
The band Aka Moon is a three piece: Sax, Bass, and Drums. However, they
are constantly collaborating with different musicians from around the
globe, so you never know what you are going to hear. I will describe the
music as progressive, avant guard jazz fusion. Super complex, melodic,
and yet highly emotional. The musicianship of this band is as high as
it gets. Stephane Galland (drums) has long since beaten out Bill Bruford,
and Phil Collins for the title of best drummer in my opinion. (And my
opinion is right!!) I don't really have time to go into all the things
that makes this band great right now. Maybe I will review another album
later and go a little farther into it. But really what could I say that
a listen for your self wouldn't explain much better. This album is a great
place to start listening to Aka Moon. The first track is probably the
most accessible song they've ever recorded and would be easy for first
time listeners to grasp and appreciate. It has a relatively simple and
catchy melody that you can understand and jam to right away. After that
they head back into classic Aka Moon style writing. Songs that start slow
and build up to frenzied masterpieces of rhythmic and melodic intelligence
that will suck you in, raise your blood pressure and cause your adrenal
glands to leak all over.
I don't know where you are in your journey of musical discovery. For some,
this will be like feeding caviar to a kid who wants McDonalds, or giving
a beautiful belgian double to a guy who drinks miller light. You literally
have to work up to this music. So if you think your there, give it a listen.
But if it doesn't seem to make sense after a while, you should ask yourself
what my dad would ask you: "Are you allowed to listen to this?"

During this period, members of Yes decided to put
out individual albums. I have not heard all of them in completion, but
consider the majority mediocre. Olias is the exception. Jon Anderson's
solo effort contains lot's of the peripheral instrumentation that permeates
some of the better Yes albums, and contains strong melodies and vocalizations.
It is an interesting album musically, and deserves a listening now and
then.

I've always thought that one should not buy a
live concert album before checking studio albums out first. I feel this
way because the added excitement and improvisation a live album can provide
may seem to be missing on studio albums. However, this was the first After
Crying album I got anyway! In this case, it may have been the right call.
AC has many moods, a variety of talent, a broad spectrum of writing and
playing, and this album shows most of it. They are most influenced by
King Crimson and Keith Emerson, and this influence is often heard, but
with AC's own originality. John Wetton joins this performance for a live
version of Crimson's Starless at the end of disc 1. This double album
started my excitment about this band's music, and I have not been disappointed.

The first time you listen to After Crying,
you will realize that you've not heard music like this before. A well-crafted,
thoughtful, meticulous execution of blended progressive and classical
styles, played by multi-instrumental musicians results in works of art
that stand alone.
I've often thought about which After Crying
album I would recommend to someone who has never listened to them. This
one may be it, but then again, it's hard because AC's styles are so varied.
Föld És Ég is widely influenced by Keith Emerson,
and this influence is obvious on the first two tracks. Their titles have
Manticore in them for a reason.
Enigma is a short, slow, solemn piece, followed by Rondo, another
Keith Emerson - influenced composition. Within Rondo is a Benny The Bouncer
style section.
Zene Gitárra is an odd acoustic guitar piece, recorded to
sound like the player is working the song out - interesting.
Leltár is one of the most beautiful acopella pieces I've
ever heard, and demonstrates AC's vocal abilities, although because there
are various vocalists throughout their repertoire, I would not declare
that all AC's vocals are outstanding. I like some better than others.
Júdás, track 7, returns back to Keith Emerson style
composition. If you pay attention, even Keith's piano playing style is
replicated.
Cisz-dúr Koncertetûd is another solemn and peaceful
piece. At 6 minutes long, this may have done better at around 4 minutes.
Track 9, Puer Natus In Bethlehem, is what I consider a classic After
Crying piece. It begins simply, and builds from there, slowly adding additional
instruments as well as complexity. The complexities are subtle and require
a deep listening to benefit fully. This is true of this entire album,
and is not recommended as background music.
Bár Éjszaka Van is another soft piece, but this one
has spoken vocals throughout. This is a fairly common practice by AC,
and they are always welcome to me. The spoken voice is always selected
and executed with great care, making it a beautiful sound. The words (as
are all on this album) are in the native Hungarian tongue, which adds
to its beauty.
The last track, Kétezer Év, is another classic AC
composition, again slowly building and containing growing melodies that
are terrific, accompanied by musically astute players, none playing for
themselves, but contributing to the composition. Acopella - like vocals
return throughout, making this a fitting end to one amazing album. Don't
miss out on the amazing drumming on this track, although you might want
to call it cymbaling. Taste and perfection abound here. SC

After Crying is a band from Hungary, and well known
among progressive elites while being completely unheard of to the rest.
When I first listened to Show, I was dissapointed. It was very different
from the other albums I listened to, and so my expectations were dashed.
After repeated listenings, I began to appreciate what After Crying was
attempting to accomplish with this piece. I now think this piece of work
is close to a masterpiece.
Show is a concept album, unlike any before it. Listen without preconceived
expectations and appreciate the combined flavors of jazz, rock, classical,
and a touch of techno here and there, performed by musicians who are indeed
masters of the craft. SC
