    This album’s depth surprised me. On the first track, “ Garden Of Earthly Delights “ , Mikael Akerfeldt’s vocals transform the dark lyrics into an ethereal vessel floating in a dream…a nightmare. i.e. “ prince of lies is on his knees…”
    Herein lie beautiful, dark, rich melodies echoing amid blistering guitar riffs. The frequent whispering amid ghostly guttural chanting is hypnotic. Then we hear soothing, pleading, crying acoustics layered with Akerfeldt’s velvet musings. He has never sounded better. Death is calling and it never sounded so bitter, so sweet, so seductive.
    “Relentlessly emotional” sums up this offering. For a band who set out to be the most evil band in the world, it seems fitting that this, their 13th studio album is their most powerful and significant work yet.
    Every song is persistent and mesmeric. I have been an Opeth fan for years and if one listens to their discography from 1st to this, their 13th, you will notice the steady transition from hard death metal to the current prog rock model, which for me is mouthwatering, as prog is my home. Brilliant musicianship throughout. This album , in my opinion, WILL stand the test of time. LRC
